Tandimol Trek

Tandimol Trek – A Trip to Remember

Hiking in the Western Ghats was definitely a delightful experience for me. This is because the place is not only older than the mighty Himalayan range but also a lot more diverse. The place is also designated as the UNESCO world heritage site and contains large proportions of the country’s flora and fauna.  Ooty, Mahabaleshwar, Lonavala, Khandala, Munnar, Ponmudi, Coonoor, Vythiri etc. are some of the best hill stations in the Western Ghats that attract large numbers of tourists every year.

In this context, we will share another fascinating experience of trekking in the Western Ghats that is the Tandimol Trek.

Tandimol Trek: Overview

This famous peak is the highest in the Coorg district and the third highest in the state of Karnataka after Mullayangiri and Kudremukh. The peak is standing at a height of 5740 feet above sea level. This is one of the most popular Trekking destinations among tourists in the Western Ghats.

The trek comes under the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary of the Bhagamandala Range Forests, which offers magnificent views of the valleys, water bodies, Shola forest and lush green vegetation. Apart from these, one will be able to witness the sights of colourful birds and butterflies. Trekking along this place will definitely test the patience of a hiker even if he is experienced, like trekking in the forest and the final section might seem to be difficult due to slippery on the way especially, during the monsoon.

Thus, the trek is graded as moderate in its difficulty level. The starting point of this trek is the Nalknad Palace which is situated at the foothills of this peak. This 200-year-old palace is said to be built during the year 1792.

Trek distance: 14 km approx

Trek duration: 2 days

Tandimol Trek: Journey and experience

The journey towards the Tandimol Peak

Day-1

  • I started my overnight journey from Bangalore by a local bus towards the Kakkabe village which had happened to be my base camp.
  • Upon arrival Kakkabe village in front of the Kakkabe bridge and then took an auto from there to reach the Nalknad Palace.
  • The road is straight forward to the Nalknad Palace and on the way, I spotted some picturesque views of coffee estates, pepper plantations etc.
  • The next part of the trek passes through the mud and gravel section and the actual trek starts from here.
  • There is a waterfall that appears only during the monsoon and post-monsoon.
  • After that, I was taken through the green vegetation with beautiful vistas of sloping greens and green-carpeted grasslands.
  • Then further trekking uphill I came to walk through the beautiful Shola forests which are rich in various flora and fauna. The place is also home to many wildlife but unfortunately, none of it was part of my trek.
  • Then after reaching the summit and having my lunch I enjoyed the breathtaking views of the surroundings from the peak.
  • Then after freshening up myself in the lap of nature I enjoyed a bonfire with my other trip mates and at last, my day ended with a mouth-watering dinner at my campsite.

Day-2

  • On the next day, I woke up witnessing the wonderful sunrise from this place and also the first ray of sunshine beaming into my tent.
  • Then again freshening up myself and having some mouth-watering breakfast, I started off with my downhill journey towards the base.
  • Upon arrival at the base, I went to explore some nearby attractions of Tandimol which added an extra thrill to my trip.
  • Then after visiting those places I started my return journey towards Bangalore and here my whole trip comes to an end.

Other memorable experiences near Tandimol Trek

1.Nalknad Palace

Naked Palace was my first destination after the Tandimol Trek. The palace is one of the gems at the base of Tandimol peak. This Palace is said to be built between 1792 AD to 1794 AD and also serves as a base camp for the trek. The main attraction of this Palace is its rich history and complex artwork.

2.Chelavara Falls

Chelavara Falls was my next attraction which is located 16 km away from the central city of Virajpet. The fall is said to be formed by the tributary of Kaveri and a scenic pleasure for every tourist where I was not the exception. The fall has a height of 150 feet and the water is 100 feet deep and dangerous. My activity for this spot was only photography.

3.Kubbe Hills

The third and last destination of my whole Tandimol trip was the Kubbe Hills located 22 km from Virajpet. The place showcases numerous coffee plantations, several lush paddy fields and the picturesque Western Ghats.
